ChatVille is a free random video chat for adults, a roulette-style site where the people on camera are other visitors rather than paid performers. It calls itself "a free video chat community where random strangers from all over the world come to meet and make new friends", and it costs nothing to open: the FAQ says the service is "completely free and you don't need to pay for features", registration is free, and a guest login skips registration altogether. Everyone must be 18 or older.

What you get and how the money works

The format. The home page sums up the offer in one line: ChatVille "allows you to have webcam chat with up to four users at the same time, have a private cam2cam video chat with random strangers, rate other users, and see who is watching your live webcam." So it combines two things, a multi-person webcam view of up to 4 users and a one-to-one private mode, with a random element on top. The Omegle alternative page says that if you don't want to talk to someone, you "can click on the Next button on the video chat box and meet a new stranger." The FAQ describes the general idea of the format the same way: "You can always skip users on these communities and meet another person again."

Random video chat with a choice. The home page says the service lets you "instantly find male or female users who interest you and have the ability to invite them to a private cam chat". Matching is therefore partly random and partly chosen: a Next button for strangers, a gender filter for narrowing, and an invite for taking someone private. The site says it works in any browser, including Android and iOS browsers, on computers as well as phones. No app is mentioned, only the browser.

The gender filter. This is the feature the site stresses most. The home page says random chat "is provided with a gender filter option" and that you will see the gender of a chat partner before you talk, with girls, guys and couples among the users. The Omegle alternative page says the filter costs nothing: "We provide this service free for our members and even guests." It adds that you "can filter genders and you can even see broadcasts of users before you chat with them on this website." That last point matters for a cam2cam room, since a visitor can look at someone's broadcast before deciding to start a conversation.

Cam2cam. The private cam2cam video chat is in the site's opening description, and the Omegle alternative page says users can use a camera and a microphone. You can broadcast yourself to the room, or use your webcam in a private chat with one person. The home page says a guest does not need to register to video chat live, but that a free account brings "many added benefits such as unlimited messages, private webcam chat, reserved nickname, members only room access, and much more!" The Omegle alternative page puts it the same way: "To use our full Omegle video chat alternative features, you will need to register though." So guests can watch, chat and video chat in the open rooms, while private webcam chat, a reserved nickname, unlimited messages and the members-only rooms come with the free account.

Free cams. Nothing described on the site costs money. The FAQ says "this service is completely free and you don't need to pay for features. However sometimes you will need to register to use some features. Signing up to our website is free too." The pages describe no tokens, tips, paid private shows or professional performers. In this directory the free cams label means exactly that: the visitor pays nothing, and the people on screen are other users.

Camera optional. The FAQ says no device is required: "You can talk to people through text or video chat. We don't limit our users at all!" The Omegle alternative page adds that you are "allowed to talk with only text to strangers who has a camera", so a visitor who would rather not appear on screen can still take part by typing. The same page says the video chat runs "in HD quality" and that registration is "free and fast", with a guest option in the chatbox for anyone who wants to skip it.

Rooms and other modes. The home page lists text chat, group chat and multi-chat as options, and says you can ask people questions to start a topic. It also describes a section called Omegle Stickam, a broadcasting feature where you can talk to people online while broadcasting, and says "All of the features are free!" The site calls itself "one of the oldest chat sites that providing random chat features to its users", which is its own claim; the pages give no founding year.

Who you meet. The FAQ answers where users come from: "You will generally meet people from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Australia, and New Zealand". The site says its features are in English.

House rules and moderation. The rules at the top of the home page are short: be at least 18, do not show recorded videos or pictures in your webcam while broadcasting, do not be rude, obscene or do anything illegal while broadcasting, do not ask for or give out personal information or spam the chat, and do not log in as a female or couple if you are a male. The site also says, in its own words, "You are not going to be monitored by our staff". The footer links to a report abuse page, terms and a privacy page, but the pages do not describe how abuse reports are handled.

The figures from the pages

  • Cost: free. The FAQ says you "don't need to pay for features", and registration is free.
  • Guest access: yes, through a guest option in the chatbox, with no registration needed for live video chat.
  • Users on screen at once: up to 4, per the home page.
  • Gender filter: free "for our members and even guests".
  • Video quality: "HD quality", per the Omegle alternative page.
  • Minimum age: "All members need to be 18-years-old minimum to use our services."
  • Free account extras it names: unlimited messages, private webcam chat, reserved nickname, members only room access.
  • Where users come from, per the FAQ: the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Australia and New Zealand.
  • Devices: any browser, including Android and iOS browsers.

The paywall question has an unusual answer here: there is none on the pages. The pages describe no tokens, packages, subscriptions or payment methods. The only gates are the age line and, for private webcam chat and the members-only rooms, a free account.

Who it suits and who it does not

ChatVille suits an adult who wants a free random video chat with some control: a Next button when a stranger isn't a match, a gender filter without a charge, a look at someone's broadcast before talking, and a way to invite someone into a private cam2cam chat. It works for someone who would rather type than appear on camera, for couples, who are named among the users, and for visitors on a phone browser who do not want to install anything. A person who likes watching a few users at once and rating them will find that described, and English speakers from the countries the FAQ names are the crowd it says to expect.

It is a weaker choice for someone who wants professional performers, scheduled shows or paid private rooms, because none are described. The pages also give few operational specifics: no user count, no description of how reports are handled, and a plain statement that staff do not monitor users. A visitor who wants a clearly moderated space should weigh that line before joining. The site's strongest claims about being better than other random chats are its own opinion.
